And I've been advised to add that the transmission pops out of gear when the engine is holding you back, like when going down a hill or slowing you down before stepping on the brakes.

In my experience, the "popping out of gear," most often while under a load, is caused by a defective synchronizer.

I have experienced that a few times. Usually synchro related as stated, but I was baffled once by a missing thrust washer in a transmission. We failed to install it because we didn't know it took one. We went through about 3 or 4 synchros before discovering the reason. If the car was restored and doing that, it may be the culprit. If it is an original car, probably a synchro.

But isn't a '29 Lincoln a crash box with no synchronizers?

I have been in search of some good mechanic, who can help me in providing me with the piston shaft assembly for the engine of my Honda car which got seized. Can someone suggest.

If it has synchros or not, the teeth on the gears for the shift sleeve (or synchro) are worn. Not just the synchro. Tear down time and new parts $$$$

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't your problem in the shift tower? In the top cover, aren't they're detent plugs that are spring loaded and detent into the shifter rails? When they wear, the car will pop out of gear.
