I have a great photo of the Rolls Royce (parked in the snow) from the Great Gatsby hanging on a wall in my office. The car is a 1928 Rolls Royce Phantom I Springfeld built Ascot Touring (Brewster bodied). The "Blue Sedan" from the Great Gatsby is an Auburn of I believe 1928.
Dear John,
Thank you very much for the answer about the "Gatsby" cars. I will try to look them up in the Kimes book.
Again, thank you very much.
Robert D. Adams ![]()
I thought I would make a correction about the Auburn. It is a 1927 888 Sedan. The car is currently for sale for $22,500, 401-467-6960, 401-261-4102, rscottis@aol.com. If you type Great Gatsby Auburn into a search engine you can find the advertisement.
I saw the "Road to Perdition" over the weekend (a good movie) and the narration said that it was "the winter of 1931" (of course you have two winters in every year so we are hopping it is would be going into the year 1932. I am fairly sure the Buick that Tom Hanks drove was a 1931 with 1932 Wheels and bumpers, and the Pierce Arrow was also a 1932 (being a club sedan in an 8 or 12).
Another good movie with Classic cars is Chinatown. The Classics in it include a Cadillac of 1937 (a 75 Series V-8 or 85 Series V-12), and the Packard is a V-12 of 1938 or 1939.
[ 07-31-2002: Message edited by: JOHN MERENESS ]
[ 07-31-2002: Message edited by: JOHN MERENESS ]
The Chinatown Packard Twelve appears to be a '39...I think I saw a column shifter...which was only avail. on the Twelve in '39...look at the dash...I know..I know...because the front shutters were all plated....(not alternately painted and plated...that can throw you off...)
Pete Hartman
Peter,
Now that you mention it, the Packard in Chinatown may be the 39, I believe you can see a column shifter.
[ 07-31-2002: Message edited by: JOHN MERENESS ]
